"In the end, we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught."
Baba Dioum

UCSC Environmental Programs oversees more than 60 environmental regulatory permits from seven regulatory agencies, covering activities at the Santa Cruz main campus, Long Marine Laboratories and the Lick Observatory at Mt. Hamilton.

Permits cover environmental issues such as air emissions, hazardous materials storage, hazardous waste management, storm water discharge from construction and industrial activities, and wastewater discharge.

Dan Blunk is the University liaison with all environmental regulatory agencies. For more information about campus permits, permit applications or environmental regulations, contact Dan.

"Conservation is sometimes perceived as stopping everything cold, as holding whooping cranes in higher esteem than people. It is up to science to spread the understanding that the choice is not between wild places or people, it is between a rich or an impoverished existence for man."
Thomas E. Lovejoy

Environmental Programs oversees various environmental monitoring programs. Routine monitoring activities include spring and stream flow assessment for the campus and surrounding area, storm water quality monitoring, waste water analysis and air emissions assessments.
