Underground Storage Tanks

click for full size image 647KUCSC operates four underground storage tanks (USTs) for the safe storage of petroleum products. All four tanks are located on the main campus. Two of the tanks are located at fleet services and are used to fuel campus vehicles. The other two tanks are located at the Fackler Cogeneration Plant where they store emergency fuel for the cogeneration engine, allowing it to produce electricity and heat to the campus if the supply of primary engine fuel (natural gas) is interrupted.

All four tanks are operated under permits issued by the county of Santa Cruz. Each tank is double walled and fitted with automatic leak detection, overfill protection, alarms, double walled piping, and is subject to periodic testing to ensure that all safeguards are functioning properly.

Questions concerning the campus underground storage tanks may directed to Dan Blunk, Environmental Programs Mgr, 9-3541.
