Instructions for New X-ray Generating Device Operator

  1. Study the Radiation Safety Fundamentals Workbook. You will be responsible for knowing all the information in this manual. It is suggested you use the self assessments at the end of each section to guide your study. A test will be administered and must be passed before work with radiation begins.
  1. Study the Analytical X-ray Safety Workbook. You will be responsible for knowing all the information in this manual. It is suggested you use the self assessments at the end of each section to guide your study. A test will be administered and must be passed before work with radiation begins.
  1. Complete the Applicant Training and Experience Form. Have your PI sign the bottom of the form.
  1. For female users only: Read through the Prenatal Packet (June 1999) carefully. Sign and return Form 1: Prenatal Radiation Exposure Risks and Precautions. If you are now or are attempting to become pregnant and WANT to declare yourself pregnant, complete Form 2: Notification of Status as a Declared Pregnant Woman.
  1. Schedule with Radiation Safety by calling x9-2553 to view a 30 minute video reviewing the material covered in the workbook and to take an exam. (50 questions, multiple choice, closed book.)

    Please specify that you are a radioisotope user and ask to view the correct video.
  1. Schedule with Radiation Safety by calling x9-2553 to view a 20 minute video reviewing the material covered in the workbook and to take an exam. (40 questions, multiple choice, closed book.)

    Please specify that you are a X-ray device user and ask to view the correct video.
  1. Bring items 2 and 3 to Radiation Safety when you arrive to take the exam. If you successfully pass the exam, you can be authorized to begin radiation work.
