Thomson MICROMEDEX

Go directly to Thomson MICROMEDEX

The MICROMEDEX® site is a computerized library of proprietary and government databases providing rapid, easy-access to chemical, hazard, environmental, and medical information needed for safe management of chemicals. This is not an MSDS site; the information provided is different than the regulatory requirement to have an MSDS present, but it is also more accurate and detailed than the average MSDS.

How to Use Micromedex

When you click on our link to the site, you will first be taken to the Corporate Solutions from Micromedex terms and conditions page. You will need to click on the grey text saying "I accept the terms and conditions below" which is located at the top of the page to be taken into the main part of the site.

On the main Thomson Micromedex page, you choose the type of information you are giving the integrated index, and it will search all of the associated databases. The search results are presented first in order of how well the compound listed matches the information you searched on, and then by the database that the results come from. Some, such as the Dolphin database, are not available under our subscription to this service. This means that when you search on a material and click on one of the various listings in the lower frame to get the information, you may find only a greyed-out dead-end notation that a number of entries or documents were found, but you will not be given any way to access them. Sometimes you can reach that database's information through the UC-MSDS search instead; it has access to some databases that the Micromedex subscription does not (such as Dolphin). In most cases, you only have to try several other of the less obviously on-target Micromedex search results to get to an active set of entries.

If you are having trouble finding information on your chemical or material, try synonyms and variations of the name, and check all the search results brought up. You can download a 76-page pdf user's guide by clicking on the "Help" link along the top frame, or sign up for an hour-long training session delivered via web and telephone to your desk by going through the "On-line Training" link on the integrated index home page. Remember that the information at this site is detailed and very technical, appropriate for use by medical professionals needing to treat an exposure; if you need an MSDS for a common solvent so that you can add it to your shop's hazcom program, try the UC-MSDS system first.
