UC MSDS Management System

Go directly to UC-MSDS

The UC MSDS Management System currently contains over a million MSDSs. MSDSs are provided for many manufacturers, and after you locate an MSDS, you can print it out or email it.

How to Use UC-MSDS

When you click on our link to the system, you will be taken to the ChemQuick search page. You will need to disable any pop-up blocking software because the site uses them heavily and cannot be accessed without allowing them.

The search engine allows you to look for MSDS by the name of the chemical, or as an ingredient of other mixtures. This system is simple and yields the basic information required by hazcom regulations. It is not suitable for determining the safety of laboratory use, nor detailed in its discussion of the toxicity characteristics. For advanced technical information about a chemical, you need to look it up on the Micromedex database.

Avoid Using the Simple Search - the results are hard to use. The default for Simple Search is "Contains", which provides a surfeit of results which aren't readily sorted.

To initiate a search, click on "Advanced Search" in the left hand column. Each of the five fields has the option of "begins with", "contains", and "equal to". "Contains" is essentially a wild card that will bring up every MSDS with that term; "begins with" or "equal to" tend to be more effective settings. The best results will be obtained with a full product name with "equals to", and will be better with a manufacturer's name with "equals to".

To view an MSDS, click on the product name on the results page. This MSDS will be in the common ChemQuik format, as will all MSDSs. The original manufacturer's MSDS is not available at this time.

To print an MSDS, use your browser's print function.

To save an MSDS, it's recommended that you first convert it into a PDF file using Adobe Acrobat; it will be easier to use later.

To sort the data, click on "Options" in the left hand column. Choose the sort function you wish to have implemented, click the "Sort" button, then go back to the Advanced Search page and initiate your search again. The results will usually show up sorted according to your selection, but this option seems to be a bit buggy. There is also something of a sort function that can be initiated by clicking on a column heading, but this too seems to be a bit buggy.

For new searches, always click on "reset" before entering data for best results.

If you can't retrieve the MSDS you need, click on the Site Contacts link in the left hand column. Find the Site Administrator for your campus, and e-mail your MSDS request with at least the full product name and the full manufacturer's name. Response time will depend upon the Administrator's availability, the quality of the data provided in the request, and the ability of the vendor to locate and post the MSDS.
