Previous Meeting Information

Winter/Spring 2014 LSR Meeting

Thank you to those of you who were able to make it to campus last Thursday. For those of you who were not able to attend the meeting, here's a brief summary:

- EH&S annual lab inspections will begin again soon, using a new online program from the UC Office of the President. The new system, known as the "Safety Inspection Tool", will allow you to access your report and note any corrections online. We will work with each of you on this system as we inspect your labs.

- Remember that everyone working in your labs, including undergrads and visiting researchers, must complete the online Laboratory Safety Fundamentals class, print the Certificate of Completion, and give a copy of the Certificate to you. The EH&S Lab Safety Training web page has been updated with easy links to the class and certificate instructions: http://ehs.ucsc.edu/lab-safety-manual/training.html

- If you or your PI has not yet completed the LHAT assessment for your lab group, now is the time. For more info: http://ehs.ucsc.edu/services/research-safety/lhat.html

- Safety glass IOUs from the January event should start appearing in the next couple of weeks.

- Lab coat IOUs from the January event are expected to be here in June. If you need a lab coat before then, please come to the PPE Office Hours (http://ehs.ucsc.edu/services/research-safety/ppe/get-ppe.html) or contact ppe@ucsc.edu.

- Lab coat laundry is now picked up and dropped off on Mondays. Any coats not clearly labeled will be returned to PSB 101. Contact ppe@ucsc.edu with any questions regarding the laundry process or missing coats.

- Laundry for old lab coats: Please bring any lab coats without bar codes to PPE Office Hours before putting in the laundry hampers. We will make sure they are labeled so that they get back to you.

- Old lab coats: EH&S will collect old coats for distribution to undergrads, visitors, summer interns, etc. Let us know if you have some you no longer need.

- Summer interns working in labs will need to obtain Sundry accounts from ITS in order to take the Laboratory Safety Fundamentals class and enter the LHAT system. For LHAT, they need to review the lab's assessment and view the 5-min video, but they do not need to print a voucher. Remember that they need to be escorted when in the lab.

- The new Chemical Inventory System will be up and running soon.

- OTP is transitioning to WASTe. Contact hazwaste@ucsc.edu with any questions. OTP will no longer function after May 1.

- Lab Spring Cleaning Week is tentatively scheduled for the week of April 28.

Summer 2013 LSR Meeting

EH&S reviewed various program updates, fume hood information, PPE program videos and information, and self-inspections. View the Powerpoint presentation. Note that we will continue with these quarterly one-hour meetings for the LSRs, and also schedule meetings for all research personnel on specific topics, such as fire extinguisher use and earthquake preparedness. These "special topic" meetings will be announced through the LSR email list, but will be open to all researchers.

Spring 2013 LSR Meeting

The UC Office of the President (UCOP) PPE program coordinator and staff facilitated a workshop to discuss the details associated with the upcoming UCOP-sponsored lab coat program. We will transition our campus lab coat acquitision and laundry program to the new UCOP program in early 2014. At that time, each researcher will be issued two custom-fitted lab coats in either a Nomex IIIa (dark blue), 65/35 cotton/poly blend (white), or nylon splash-protective barrier coat (white with cuffs). See the workshop summary notes from the UCOP team

Winter 2013 LSR Meeting

There was a strong focus on SOP writing, what to do when Cal/OSHA comes to your door and the upcoming PPE policy.
