Summary: If you are shipping a
genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically modified
micro-organism (GMMO), please read the following description.

|
Background: UCSC conforms to strict government regulations when transporting hazardous materials. Shipments must arrive at their destination in good condition and present no hazard during shipment. A
GMO or GMMO is considered a hazardous material when shipped by air. Prior to shipping any hazardous material, please contact EH&S at (831) 459-2553.
GMO and GMMO definition: The International Air Transportation Association (IATA) defines
GMOs and GMMOs as substances which do not meet the definition of infectious
substances but which are capable of altering animals, plants or
microbiological substances in a way which is not normally the result of
natural reproduction.
Note that the U.S. Department of Transportation does not regulate
genetically modified materials. However, any time you ship a GMO/GMMO by
air, even within the U.S., you must comply with the applicable IATA
Dangerous Goods regulations.
If you are unsure if your shipment is considered a GMO
or GMMO, EHS will research your item and advise you. Contact EHS, (831) 459-2553.
