How to Ship Biological Materials

How to Ship Biological Materials

As part of the responsibilities of transporting biological materials, the shipper must properly identify, classify, package, label and provide required documentation for any shipment determined to be a hazardous material. In an effort to streamline this process, EH&S has developed guidance documents that will assist individuals in determining if their materials are covered by Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations or International Air Transport Association (IATA) guidelines. Follow the steps outlined below to classify your biological material shipment. If you have any questions regarding proper classification or whether your material meets the DOT definition of a hazardous material, contact EH&S at 9-2553 for assistance.

  1. Classify your material based on information provided in the EH&S guidance document, CLASSIFICATION GUIDELINES FOR SHIPPING BIOLOGICAL MATERIALS

  1. If you determine your materials ARE regulated, you must contact EH&S for assistance with shipping.
    1. Complete IMPORT/EXPORT SHIPPING REQUEST form and submit to EH&S via e-mail at ehs@ucsc.edu.

  1. If you determine your materials ARE NOT regulated by the DOT / IATA, you are authorized to ship.
    1. Complete SHIPPING DOCUMENTATION RECORD, include authorized signature and leave in drop box at the Main Campus Mail Room. EH&S does not need to review your shipment.
