UC Santa Cruz Designated Campus Fire Marshal, Nick Otis, named as President of the California Fire Prevention Officers: Northern Division
The mission of the California Fire Prevention Officers organization (CA FPO) is to promote the protectionof life, property and the environment from the effects of fire and other hazardous events, through
effective education, engineering, and code enforcement. CA FPO is also a statewide chapter of both the
International Code Council (ICC) and the NFPA International Fire Marshal Association (IFMA)
Nick and CA FPO will work in conjunction with a wide range of fire safety organizations.

Nick Otis joined the campus in 2014, as the Deputy Fire Marshal. After the retirement of former Campus
Fire Marshal Rick Rodewald, in 2017, Nick was selected to fill the position. Since then, Nick has been
responsible for oversight and compliance monitoring of fire code standards for all campus buildings,
properties, and facilities. Two major areas include Title 19 of the California Code of Regulations, covering
existing structures; and Title 24 of the California Code of Regulations, regulating fire safety for new
buildings.
