Summary: The University of California has a contract with American Cargoservice, Inc. for International Freight Forwarding and Customs Brokerage services for the entire U.C. system. ACS can assist researchers, procurement departments, project managers, and other University staff with all of their transportation logistics needs!

First: Always contact Environmental Health and Safety prior to processing hazardous materials shipments for export outside the United States. EH&S will advise you if you need to contact American Cargoservice, Inc. directly about your shipment.

Background:

  • Exports: UCSC EH&S processes most outgoing hazardous materials shipments destined for foreign countries and then passes the shipments to a carrier. American Cargoservice, Inc. is used where the items are cleared through U.S. Customs and booked with a carrier for transport.   
  • Imports: American Cargoservice, Inc. clears incoming goods from foreign countries through U.S. Customs and notifies UCSC Receiving when material is received. UCSC Receiving or American Cargoservice, Inc. will:        
    • Notify departments when goods arrive        
    • Request payment and delivery information

Ø  ACS can arrange import, export, and domestic shipments of all kinds (except household moves).

Ø  They have extensive experience shipping research equipment around the world, including Dangerous Goods.

Ø  ACS can invoice your campus directly – all you need to do is provide then with the proper paperwork.

Ø  ACS has a customs power-of-attorney for the University, making them your go-to company for customs clearance for import shipments.

Ø  ACS can arrange Importer Security Filing for your ocean import shipments – Contact them before anything ships to you by ocean to avoid possible fines and penalties.
