EH&S Lab Safety Training Classes

EH&S offers an ongoing series of laboratory safety training classes. Visit the UC Learning Center to see when the next classes will be held and to register for a specific class. Note that some classes are instructor-led training ("ILT"), while others are now available online ("eCourse"). 

To register for laboratory safety classes using the UC Learning Center, follow these steps:

  1. Log In using your CruzID Gold Password
  2. Select "Catalog" in the Quick Links section
  3. Select "Laboratory and Research Safety" from the list under Environment, Safety, and Emergency Management
  4. Highlight the class of interest
  5. Click the "Register" button to see a complete list of dates and times for that class

Note that some people who have not used the UC Learning Center before may not be able to log in immediately. If this is the case, follow instructions from the UC Learning Center and submit a form. This will allow you to obtain a log in ID and password. This may delay your access to the system by 2-3 days.

Biosafety and Bloodborne Pathogens

The initial Biosafety and Nucleic Acid Technologies class is REQUIRED for all researchers planning to use biological material, including recombinant DNA. This class is instructor-led and typically offered monthly. Register through the UC Learning Center, or contact the Biosafety Officer (biosafety@ucsc.edu) for more information. 

The Bloodborne Pathogens training class is REQUIRED for all personnel handling human or non-human primate tissues, sera, cell cultures, or other materials. Initial and refresher Bloodborne Pathogens training can be taken online as an eCourse through the UC Learning Center, or as a special lab group training session arranged with the Biosafety Officer (biosafety@ucsc.edu). This class must be repeated annually. 

To Take the Online Bloodborne Pathogens Course:

  1. Log on to http://learningcenter.ucsc.edu/ (UC Learning Center).
  2. Enter CruzID and Gold password.
  3. Search using the phrase "bloodborne pathogens." You will see the "Bloodborne Pathogens" Topic.
  4. Click "Register."
  5. Click in the middle of the box for "Bloodborne Pathogens (Online)."
  6. Click "Next," then "Submit."
  7. To begin the course, click "Start."

Chemical Inventory 

Training on the existing Chemical Inventory System (CIS) is provided on an as-needed basis to lab personnel. In addition, EH&S can assist lab groups in transitioning to the new UC Chemicals inventory system. The new user-friendly "Chemicals" system includes both computer and mobile interfaces, QR codes for chemical containers, and enhanced search functions. Contact EH&S (ehs@ucsc.edu, 9-2553) to arrange for training.

Controlled Substance Program

Controlled Substances training is REQUIRED for all personnel with access to controlled substances in the lab. To register for the online "Controlled Substances" class through the UC Learning Center, click here.   

Hazardous Waste Management

Hazardous Waste Management training is REQUIRED for all personnel generating or handling hazardous waste. To register for the online "Hazardous Waste Management" class through the UC Learning Center, click here. 

Laser Safety

Laser Safety training is REQUIRED for all personnel working with Class 3 or 4 lasers. To register for the online "Laser Safety Training" through the UC Learning Center, click here. 

Radiation Safety

Radiation Safety training is REQUIRED for all personnel using radioactive materials or radiation-producing machines. See the Radiation Safety page for information on training.
