UCSC Environmental Health and Safety manages a UCOP sponsored satellite device loaner program. Currently we have four Garmin InReach SE+ satellite communication devices available for use by field researchers working in areas with unreliable cell service.
The Sat Device is intended to serve as an emergency communication tool and personal locator when engaged in university-related activities. The InReach units operate on the Iridium satellite network, with 100% global coverage when given a clear view of the sky.
Researchers who are interested in using the communicator should read and sign the UCSC Sat Device Use Agreement and contact the field safety program (fieldsafety@ucsc.edu) to schedule a brief in-person orientation and pick up the unit.
